Hartley Loudspeakers are renown for both their quality and sound. The Compact Reference Monitors by Tri-Art Audio share the same genuine drivers, crossover and internal volume as the original Hartley compact in a re-imagined contemporary design. The new design for the monitor has a reconfigured orientation of the ports and tweeter for a tightened sound. This in combination with the modern design elements of the cabinet takes the Compact Reference from a ‘70s monitor sound to a more modern, high-resolution, fast, and detailed presentation.

  • High Performance Driver Design
    The Compact Reference Monitors use a polypropylene driver with an exceptionally large voice coil and magnet fabricated in-house to Hartley precision specs. The design allows for greater linearity, resulting in exceptional dynamic range and clarity, as well as extended low end response with minimal distortion.

    Tuned Port
    2” x 2.5” front-firing port tuned at
    45 Hz. 

    Cabinet Shape
    The cabinet is designed to minimize unwanted reflections. While square boxes amplify energy along the edges, our unique shape embraces that energy. Instead of trying to eliminate it through dampening, the design uses it to amplify sound, much like a reverse horn. The waffled edges at the back of the speaker help guide the sound out smoothly, like turbulence at the end of an aircraft wing. This keeps the sound clean and clear, without those unwanted reflections.

    Cabinet Design
    Cabinet is made from  high-quality, solid 3 ply bamboo, cured and CNC fabricated in our woodshop. Bamboo is selected for its density, and resonance control which lends a natural harmonic contribution to the speaker sound.

    A blend of different density sheep and hemp wool, sourced locally, is used for sound dampening within the cabinet.

    Audio Engineered Design
    The Reference speakers are now
    on short stands instead of being
    floor-standing. This in combination 
    with the changed orientation of the front-firing ports and tweeter in one circle tightens up and focuses the sound better making it faster and more detailed. 

  • Acoustically treated sound absorber.
    - A blend of different density sheep and hemp wool, sourced locally, is used for sound dampening.
    - The cabinet is made from  high-quality, solid 3 ply bamboo, cured and CNC fabricated in-house. Bamboo is selected for its density, and resonance control which lends a natural harmonic contribution to the speaker sound. Finished with a hand rubbed oil application. 

    Natural: A hand-applied, clear finish that allows for the natural grain and patina of the bamboo to be revealed.

    Black: A hand applied, rich covering stain that blocks all the grain of the wood.

    Distressed Black: A hand-applied, dark stain that allows for highlights to be revealed resulting in an umbra effect.

    Graphite: A hand-applied, translucent finish that enhances the grain and details of the wood.

    TREATMENT: Use Tri-Art Audio’s wood treatment oil to maintain the finish and treat the wood.
